The Fortress of Santo António was built in the 16th century by D. Sebastião to protect the mouth of the river Gilão at the entrance to the port of Tavira.
From 1640, during the restoration period, the fort took on a secondary role due to the construction of another fortification to protect the Tavira river entrance, and it was progressively abandoned until 1840, when it was definitively deactivated.
With a polygonal plan, it is still possible to distinguish the quartering spaces, storeroom and supply well inside.
It is one of the testimonies of the defense of the Algarve coast by the Portuguese Crown.
